True Religion June 17, 2007

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27a

Many people today have a wrong view of religion. A lot of these false views fall into one of two camps. Either they believe that religion is doing good deeds, or they believe that they can just call themselves religious and have no deeds. Both of these views are false. James 2:21-22 says …was not Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.

After going to jail recently, Paris Hilton claims that she’s found “religion.” She says that when she gets out of jail she will be different; she will try to be a good person. Now I don’t know all the details behind this, but I’m willing to guess that all Paris found was a wake up call to change her ways. She claims to have changed on the outside, but to have true religion, a person must first be changed on the inside. Many people look at James 1:27 and see only the first part that talks about looking after orphans and widows. However the verse continues. It says that true religion keeps oneself from being polluted by the world. Since any good deed we would do outside of our life in Christ would come from selfish motives [pollution of this world], we need Christ to keep our motives pure and unpolluted.

There are many people today who don’t believe that there lives have to change when they become a Christian. I can think of many people who go to church on Sunday but if someone who they thought would mock Christianity asked them about their faith, they wouldn’t talk about Jesus. This is a dead faith. As it says in James, faith without works is useless. As Christians we are a new creation. We are no longer self seeking idiots aimlessly wondering through life not sure what in the world we were doing, but we are new creatures who are overjoyed by the grace we have been shown and are prepared by God to perform good works. Ephesians 2:10 says, for we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand.

Religion does not come by being good; neither does it come without cost. We must first realize our deadness because of sin, then we must accept Christ as our Savior, lastly Christ will give us the heart to serve. Not because he forces us, but because we are so overjoyed by the mercy he has shown. There are steps to obtaining true religion, and they don’t start with us.

i dont know but r u saying we have to changed from the inside to find religion. first i’m confused whos god rite now is it jesus or somebody else.people dont mock jesus because he is a good man. ermm man? that means he is just a man? how do u see a man become a god?then god can be silly and have fun sometimes is it? he must have lust or maybe appreciate the weather or something and want to know what is in the news channel.that is human. now ur religion is confusing. if jesus is your savior why is there suffering among christian

You have some very good questions, Yezzabebeh. First things first: “R U saying we have to be changed from the inside to find religion.” Answer: You don’t “find religion” as much as receive a calling to faith in Jesus as your Savior. It does change you from the inside out.

God is Jesus, so to speak. We believe that God has three different aspects to His personality, which we define using human terms. He refers to Himself in Scripture as God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit (the One who helps us see where we have fallen short.) But all three are One Person.

The people who think Jesus was just a good man are missing a key aspect of who Jesus was. Jesus, according to Scripture, was fully God, and fully man. Read the account of Jesus’ birth in Matthew, Mark, or Luke.

Yes, God takes pleasure in small things. He likes to see His creation taking pleasure in what He has designed. Jesus as a man experienced the same joys and sorrows that we do, yet He didn’t sin. He was tempted like every man to lust, but He didn’t. It’s encouraging to me to know that Jesus who was perfect went through the same temptations I go through.

Our faith is confusing to those who have not seen who Jesus really is, and who have not confessed Jesus as their personal Savior. The Bible tells us that it’s confusing to those who don’t have the same teaching that we have. I have been given understanding through the Holy Spirit (mentioned earlier as the One who helps me to see things clearly including times when I fail). I know I am a sinner, falling short of the perfection required by a Holy God. Having admitted that to myself and to God, I believe what Scripture says about Jesus and that He died so I didn’t have to pay the penalty for sin. Finally, I confess to you that this is what I believe.

Suffering among Christians? It’s God’s method of purifying His church. If there is no suffering, there is no growth. A corn stalk doesn’t grow until the seed has been planted and it has died. Once the seed has died, the corn stalk can grow in the appointed season. Purification can be for correction of sin in a believer, for instruction for a group of believers, or to make people like you ask so that we can tell you about Jesus!

If you want some of those passages in Scripture that I was talking about, just ask.

i went to find out more about jesus and the more i find is that he seems to be just a man flesh and blood. other religion also see him n respect him only as a prophet if he is god he doesnt have to become man (islam n jew) like other religion they all have one god and god told to worship HIM but can u find one verse or sentence in your scripture or bible that jesus ask his followers and all human to worship HIm and i will convert to your religion automatically.prove it

im also heard that the trinity u said is made up by people just 800 years ago and jesus never said anything about this but this was decided after he was long dead. now how can u tell this is wat jesus said or just people decide in one big meeting

    @ everyone: I’m back

@ Paul: glad to see you have another post lol. I was beginning to wonder. Thanks for commenting while I was gone.

@ yezzabebeh: Thanks for asking questions. I pray you continue to do so.

I would have to agree with everything Paul said and as to the question of if Jesus claimed to be God here are some exerts from John 10

Jesus’s miracles spoke of his deity

24 The Jews gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me,…

Only God can give eternal life, but Jesus claims that he can give eternal life. This is a clear claim of deity.

…28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” 31Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, 32but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” 33″We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

Mark 14:61-64 Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.

John 14:8-10 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?

As for the subject of the Trinity, that’s kind of a tough one to explain. All three are God, and yet none is higher than the others. They are all equally God. I have already explained that Jesus and the Father are God, next I hope to show you that the Holy Spirit is also God.

Acts 5.3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.”

Notice how Peter intertwines God and the Holy Spirit?

If you have anymore questions please don’t hesitate to ask them.

  9. yezzabebeh Says:

Hello thanks for the explanation but I dont ask any I want answers.you did not convince me to become a christian yet.

please listen carefully….to my original question

    1. Did Jesus himself ask and told his followers to WORSHIP him and PRAY to him?

    2. Why your bible mention what John said isnt this suppose to be a book and word of GOD which is Jesus?

    3. Before this people all accepted Jesus died as a man and accepted his religion. But then people lose faith and started to get boring and suddenly boom! Trinity and divine is created in a meeting or chatroom by normal people in Alexandria Egypt years after Jesus was dead to create a story of Jesus that he became a god so that they can attract people back to the religion . Even Jesus didnt mention that he was god and about Trinity itself can u prove Trinity is man made or create by Jesus…

i said i will convert to christianity but you didnt answer my question at all.. please read it and think about this maybe your god is actually just a regular guy and his powers were given by God to help his people to return to the path of goodness. Like all prophets before him Moses, abraham and so on. Im sorry I have to say this ok..

  10. yezzabebeh Says:

Please answer the question. you can answer by saying YES or NO. Dont need long story or long explanation just pure facts.

    thanks again

  11. isaacme Says:

I guess I just really don’t understand your point. Why would you believe Jesus when he says to worship him, but not when he says that he and God are one? To my knowledge no, Jesus did not ever specifically said to worship him. But he did claim to be God. He did say to worship God. And in verses like John 14:13 he says to pray in his name. He also said that he was the only way to heaven in John 14:6. So I don’t see what Jesus telling people to worship him has anything to do with… well, anything.

God used many men to write the bible. All of them with his inspiration. These are the words of God written by John who was just one of many men who wrote down God’s word in the scriptures.

I’m not an expert on early church history, but I believe what happened was that shortly after Jesus’ resurrection, Rome started persecuting the Christians. During this time of fleeing and dispersing, people didn’t do much studying of scripture and so many essential doctrines were “lost.” These doctrines were right there in scripture all the time but without proper studying of God’s word many people forgot them.

  12. yezzabebeh Says:

I would like to thank you for trying to get the answers but unfortunately u didnt. I ask u if you can find one sentence or one verse in the your bible that Jesus ask his people to worhip or pray to him as God, but its not in there.Dont you want to think why in your bible Jesus (if he is god) never ask his people to worship him but worship GOD.Like the old testament all prophets that lived ask people to worship the One and only God. They never asked to worship a human being because human is the creation of God like you and me. We can bleed, cry, cursing the fig tree, eat and sleep like Jesus my friend.Anyhow thanks for trying to find the answers. but like u said Jesus didnt ask his people to worship himself ……

I found out some facts for you to think about…

    1. :God and Jesus is one” in your understanding for which you have been tought is Jesus and Father is god but actually in deeper meaning is that God is always by his side for every thing that has been happening such as miracles etc.

    2. “jesus is sitting at the right of God” but actually it means that Jesus is God beloved prophet and is very important that he is sitting in a very high position to spread the word of God. He will never be compared to God because God can never be compares. For example a President has its own Vice President but the Vice President position is not the same as the president.

    3. Try to think why did Jesus have to go all through the troubles by getting hurt and bleed and crucified so that he can ask his people to worship him isnt miracles is enough to show that he is God? This is because he is just flesh and blood like you and me. Like all other prophets he is sent down to earth to bring and show the right path to those who has has been astray.

I am not trying to confuse you but try to look deeper and not just the outer context. i have tried to find more facts and compare many religion with Christianity to find more answers for myself but I am sorry I really do believed in Jesus but just as a prophet like the Jews and the Muslim believed. Good luck!

  13. isaacme Says:

True Jesus could bleed, cry and do all the things that a man could do but he was still God. He was fully God and fully man. It’s tough to understand.

Here are some differences between Jesus and the prophets

1 The prophets never claimed they could themselves save people or that they themselves were the only way to heaven. Jesus did in John 14:6

2 No prophet rose from the dead.

3 No prophet claimed to be one with God. Like Jesus did in

Here’s a quote by the famous author C.S. Lewis

A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

How many vise presidents have you known who were given complete rule over a country? None! Jesus is given complete rule over heaven and earth.

    Matthew 28:17-19
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [notice the trinity here]

My friend you have missed the whole point of Jesus’ coming to earth. He didn’t come to prove he was God. He came to die on a cross so that he might take the punishment for sin; sin that separates man from a Holy/perfect God. Another thing I’m sad to see you’ve missed is the reason for worship. Christianity is not like Mohamadism where believers are required to pray seven times a day. To the Christian, prayer/worship is an awesome privilege and a rewarding one. God created us with a vacuum in our heart that can only be filled by him. By drawing closer to God, the Christian fills his hearts true longing. Prayer is not a command; it’s a privilege.

  14. Paul D. Says:

    yezzabebeh…

Your question “Is there anywhere in the Bible where Jesus says to worship Him or pray to Him as God.” is a very good question. The answer is YES, it does. God does not leave His children in the dark. In John chapter 4 we have the story of “the woman at the well” and Jesus. In verses 19 – 26, we have the following:

19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
20 “Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.”

21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, (Y)an hour is coming when (Z)neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
22 “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.”

26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

This is a clear indication that Jesus is a) claiming to be God, and b) God requires worship. I hope this answers your question regarding that.

  15. isaacme Says:

Thanks Paul. Drartz that I didn’t remember that passage.

  16. yezzabebeh Says:

thanks for still trying to find the answer. Mr.Paul I believed u did not understand my question at all. Like other religion their messengers or prophets are being sent down to earth (like Moses and Abraham)to tell God words and asking his creation and all human beings to worship Him alone and only Him. I hope u get this point.

But in your religion Jesus and Father and Holy spirits are considered God that I understood no more explanation thank you.

But my question is did Jesus ever in his life “SAID” or ASKED his followers to PRAY or WORSHIP him? Please find ONE verse or ONE sentence in your Bible just one is enough please i really beg you.I dont want to know any indication or if he claim he is God you guys have already told me that dozens of time.REMEMBER this… ONE verse or sentence….that is all.

P/S I will not considered Holy ghost or father, and long story or historian quotes to be in your answer.Another example is like this 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”This is not acceptable
I hope if you ever find this statement which Jesus said to worship him (exclude Father or ghost) i will really take this into consideration to become a christian. If not maybe you guys should look to other religion. Happy searching you guys!

  17. yezzabebeh Says:

hello where are you guys i have been waiting? hmmmm well its ok keep up the searching maybe you can find it take care!

  18. Paul D Says:

    Yezzabebeh,

Sorry about the delay there in reply, have been on the busy side actually. I (and I am sure Trevor as well) have not been ignoring you…

I am not sure what to say here. You asked a straightforward question which I gave a straightforward answer to. Your question in my last post was a direct quote from one of your previous posts. My answer was a DIRECT statement from Jesus, stating that He was the Messiah. As Messiah, He said that He desired people to worship Him in spirit and in truth. I can’t find anything clearer than Jesus asking us to worship Him. Regarding your PS, you tell me my answer is unacceptable but it is unequivocally a part of the intrinsic nature of Jesus to claim a one-ness with the Father and to leave that out would be to take away from the deity of Christ. I can’t back down on that. I am sorry, but I fail to see how I could have been any more clear than I was.

Trevor, do you have anything to add?

  19. isaacme Says:

Well, sort of Paul. I’m kind of confused too. Yezzabebeh, I really don’t see why you would believe Jesus is God when he says to worship him but not when he flat out says he is God. This just doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to me. I would like apologize for being so late in answering. Our family has been doing some MAJOR landscaping projects and I have been busy all day and then I’m too tired to type at night. Again, I’m very sorry for taking so long.

Like Paul said, we’ve bee anwering your questiong, but its time for you to answer some of mine, Ok?

1 what is your definition of worship? The Merriam Webster dictionary describes worship as expressing reverence where reverence is due. By claiming to be God [the highest post of reverence], Jesus AUTOMATICALY claims worship. In Jesus’ day, when a king would walk through the streets people would bow down too him. Why? They were not told too. No, they knew this was the king and so they gave reverence to him. The people of Jesus’ day understood that reverence goes with the job. The same is true with Jesus. Reverence automatically comes with the occupation of being God, but, like Paul mentioned, Jesus did say that he was to be worshiped. What exactly is your definition of worship?

2 The second question I ask you is do you believe in a heaven or a hell? What do you think of Jesus’ claiming that he was the only way to heaven?

3 Third question. Show me one “prophet” [just one] besides Jesus who

    a} claimed to be God

b} Claimed he [himself] could save people from his sin.

c}claimed that he would rise from the dead.

Tell me of just one prophet who claimed all these things.

Ps. I totally agree with what Paul said. Jesus’ claims to deity and at being the only source of salvation are more than enough on the intellect scale to convince me to believe in Jesus.

  20. yezzabebeh Says:

Im really tired of asking the same question. You guys have already told me many times that Jesus is God. ok please stop there. NO more repeating Jesus CLAIM to be God I know that.

Mr. Paul u have found the statement in the Bible which Jesus said to worship him? Where? Which verse?Which sentence?

I know u said Jesus is the Messiah but I want the statement which comes out of Jesus own mouth do u understand?

My friend worship is something you dont ask for no reason. Only god can do that.

MY question is not confusing it is plain simple english it is just you that are confused in your own religion. It is ok that is why many have gone out of Christian to find more answers.Either they convert to Muslim, Jews or Buddhism. It is not because they want to find peace in their lives but clear answers about all this.

Well thanks for everything guys. The definition and answers but Im tired of asking the same question again and again. You dont have to find it anymore just go to work or go to church or somehing. Im sorry Christian is a good religion but not complete in a way. I went to Buddhisms and Jews but still I found it difficult. Im really surprised but when i went to find out about Islam it is really simple, clear, and completes me. But I still have to compare more n my research is not done yet.

I found out about Cat Stevens(the singer) on why he left Christianity and chose Islam. Maybe you should try and find out.Who knows maybe you can find the truth out there. Bye

  21. isaacme Says:

Yezzabebeh, you still haven’t answered my questions [listed above]

Yes we have been going in circles. You still haven’t given me a good answer about why you would believe Jesus’ claim to worship but not Godship. You say I’m confused by my own religion, I don’t mean to be rude, but you seam to be the one who is ignoring facts. You’re only believing parts of what Jesus says. You can say you don’t believe anything Jesus says, but you can’t just pick out the parts you want. Religion doesn’t work that way. Please know that I am praying for you and please visit these following websites.
